Defrag tool with Windows

There are a couple of ways to defrag your hard drive that comes inherently with Windows. One is to use the command line of the Windows defrag tool. Do this by going the Start Menu>[type in the words ‘cmd’ without the quotes].

Then the commands for defragmenting your hard drive is as follows:

The volume identifier is not valid. The volume identifier must be a valid local
drive letter or mount point.

Syntax: defrag <volume> -a [-v]
defrag <volume> [{-r | -w}] [-f] [-v]

Parameters:

Value Description

<volume> Specifies the drive letter or mount point path of the volume to
be defragmented or analyzed.

-c Defragments all volumes on this computer.

-a Performs fragmentation analysis only.

-r Performs partial defragmentation (default). Attempts to
consolidate only fragments smaller than 64 megabytes (MB).

-w Performs full defragmentation. Attempts to consolidate all file
fragments, regardless of their size.

-f Forces defragmentation of the volume when free space is low.

-v Specifies verbose mode. The defragmentation and analysis output
is more detailed.

-? Displays this help information.

Examples:

defrag d:\vol\mountpoint -w -f
defrag d: -a -v
defrag -c -v

Defrag with Windows Visual Tool

There are a few of ways to open the Windows Defrag Visual Tool:

Go to the Start Menu>[type in the words ‘defrag’ without the quotes]. Note if you’ve installed Auslogics defragmenter then this program will open instead of the native Windows defrag visual tool. If you wish for the native Windows defrag tool then here are some ways to do that:

Open up Windows Explorer by clicking on the WINDOWS KEY+E or go to Start Menu>Computer. Right click on the drive (eg. C Drive).

Click on Properties. Then click on the Tools tab.

The other way to open the native defrag Windows tool (visual one) then you can go the the Windows Control Panel. Double-click on the Performance and Information Tools.
