NoIndex Tag Anchor

If you don’t wish (disallow) to pass pagerank (though nowadays pagerank is not a big factor when determining SEO ranking) to a page then I found that using

is how you accomplish this. Using

will not work with the search engines and when the Google bots (or Yahoo bot or Bing/MSN bot) will actually follow the latter link AND it will pass your page’s strength to the following link.

noindex, nofollow tag in Meta tag only

The noindex, nofollow tag is used only in the meta tag which is in the header portion like so:

<meta name="robot" content="noindex, nofollow" />

W3 standards regarding the A tag

If you wish to add in more types in the attribute ‘rel’ then you would separate the Link types with a space. The official W3 site http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/struct/links.html (scrolll down about a 1/3 page) shows how the rel attribute is used. The W3 site states “This [the rel attribute] attribute describes the relationship from the current document to the anchor specified by the href attribute. The value of this attribute is a space-separated list of link types.” The Link types from the W3 site are shown here: http://www.w3.org/TR/html401/types.html#type-links. Interesting to note that W3 doesn’t list nofollow as one of the List types so I believe this is a hack for the search engine bots. If anyone has any official feedback then please let me know.

Apparently, Zadro talks about this in more depth: http://www.zadrosolutions.com/blog/seo/noindex-and-nofollow-explained/.
